UN praises Belarus for releasing over hundred prisoners

(MENAFN) The United Nations on Monday praised a recent move by Belarusian authorities to grant pardons to more than 120 imprisoned individuals, including several foreign nationals, who had been serving sentences on charges ranging from espionage to terrorism and extremism.

During a press briefing, a UN spokesperson welcomed the development, stating: “We welcome the 13 December release by the Belarusian authorities of 123 political prisoners, including the 2022 Nobel Peace laureate, Mr. Ales Bialiatski, as well as civic activist Ms. Maria Kolesnikova and commend the efforts of the United States in facilitating this and other recent releases.”

According to reports, the decision followed negotiations involving the U.S. president and was linked to an agreement that included the easing of sanctions on Belarus’s potassium industry, as outlined by official Belarusian sources.

The UN spokesperson expressed hope that the pardons would help open broader channels of engagement, particularly on rights-related issues. “We hope that this latest step enables greater dialogue, including on the issue of human rights, and we call for the release of all remaining political prisoners in Belarus,” he said.

As noted in reports, the latest release builds on earlier actions taken by Belarusian authorities.

In the previous month, the country’s president approved pardons for 23 detained individuals holding citizenship from countries including Australia, the United Kingdom, Latvia, Lithuania, the United States, Ukraine, and Japan.
