Lithuania Plans Expanding Military Training Facilities

(MENAFN)
Lithuania revealed on Monday its intentions to broaden its military training infrastructure as part of efforts to reinforce its armed forces and accommodate a greater presence of allied troops.

A report by a public broadcaster stated that the country plans to set up a new brigade-sized training ground in Kapciamiestis, located in southern Lithuania close to the borders with Poland and Belarus.

The report also noted that Lithuania intends to double the area of its current training site near Taurage in western Lithuania by extending it into an adjacent district.

This initiative was announced by the State Defense Council. Deividas Matulionis, national security adviser to President Gitanas Nauseda, explained that the Kapciamiestis location was chosen because of its significance for national security.

The site lies within the Suwałki Gap, a narrow land corridor linking the Baltic states with the rest of NATO. Lithuania, Poland, and NATO consider the Suwałki Gap to be strategically crucial and have emphasized that its defense will receive heightened attention.

The expansion plans coincide with Lithuania’s efforts to grow its armed forces through increased conscription and reserve enlistment, alongside the acquisition of modern military equipment.

Germany has committed to stationing a brigade of several thousand troops in Lithuania by 2027, a development expected to drive higher demand for extensive training facilities.
