Germany Moves to Fill Lithuania Brigade with Mandatory Postings
The first compulsory assignments are expected to begin this autumn and could involve up to 1,000 soldiers. The Defense Ministry is also due to update senior members of the parliamentary defense committee on the staffing situation.
Berlin began establishing a permanent military presence in Lithuania last year as part of its efforts to reinforce NATO's eastern flank and assume a larger role in European defense. The brigade is being formed gradually and is planned to reach a strength of roughly 4,800 personnel before becoming fully operational by the end of 2027.
Defense Minister Boris Pistorius had previously aimed to fill the formation entirely through volunteers. However, he acknowledged in June that compulsory assignments might become necessary, estimating that the number would remain below 1,000.
The most significant personnel gaps are reportedly affecting several key areas, including information technology, logistics, kitchen staff and enlisted ranks.
